For those of you that haven't used Nik it is awesome! and it is only $149 for the whole set now. I acquired Nik software a while after my JMT trip and I used Silver Efex Pro to make a bunch of black and whites. After showing a few of my JMT photos at the Ward talent show I had a few requests to see some color versions. So I am in the process of running a bunch through Color Efex Pro. On the trail about (240ish miles) there wasn't a lot of time to stop and make/wait for the perfect exposure due to time, weather, light, millage goals and so on, that is where Nik comes to the rescue in my opinion. It can really help turn your picture itno something amazing. Here is a little example of what Nik can do.
P.S. keep an eye out for a new post about the JMT with my color images.

I went out to do some light painting but lost my motivation. I didn't feel like combating the full moon or running around all over for that matter. There was this cool tree though so I decided I would do some old looking portraits. The problem is I have never done anything like this before so I have no clue what I am doing. So I have two versions my Lightroom versions and my Nik versions. Personally I am kind of fond of the Lightroom ones. I would like to know which you like more!

New Fun

Smokey orb.

An orb in the middle of a wool ring!

Under the bridge.

A fire whirl pool?

This one is pretty busy since there was six of us running around with lights but I like it.
So I bought some new tools for light painting last week and they arrived this week so I invited some people to come out and play. We went over to Willow Park and started making orbs next to the water. (+Mike Johnson is the orb king by the way.) After our first shot the Sheriffs showed up. I thought aw man already? We talked to them for a few minutes about what we were doing and showed them our photos when one of them pulled out his super bright flash light turned it to strobe and said "What would happen if you used something like this!" So we tried it! Mike ran around with his light for a picture. The Sheriffs left after that and we kept making orbs and did a shot with a roman candle. We headed over to the skate park after that and started doing some steel wool, orbs, and even did one with everyone running around with lights. The skate park is an awesome place to shoot but you aren't really supposed to be there after dark so you know Logan Police showed up and kicked us out. I guess they don't like to light paint like the Sheriffs do :( . We all left and were headed home after that but Erin and I decided to try the bridge near Stokes before we called it a night where I made one more shot. It was a great night with great people even with the law enforcement encounters. FYI nothing against Logan PD but if you are out on a shoot at night in a place you aren't supposed to be cross your fingers for the Sheriffs.

Double Time

I missed shooting last week. I had to work six nights instead of five and on my one day off I was exhausted so it just wasn't going to happen. I will do two shoots this week to make up for it though :). It has been a little warmer and the sky has been clear so it has been good for making pictures. I have some new toys coming this week so Saturday will be awesome! I will hopefully have some projects that aren't light painting soon as well.

I have been shooting at least once a week keeping up my goal and getting a lot of practice with light painting. I was browsing the web this week and discovered Dennis Calvert and was blown away. His work inspired me so much that all I want to do is shoot and practice light painting. So I went out tonight to shoot and really wasn't feeling it, the light was frustrating and I wasn't getting what I wanted. I packed up and stood there trying to figure out what I could make when inspiration struck and the first two pictures here were made! I don't know which I like more so you get to see both. While editing the third photo I came up with an idea I will try soon that might make some sweet photos. Lastly I have been wanting to do some portraits lately but haven't had the chance so I decided to go back through some photos now that I have Nik and re-work some photos. Well I only re-worked one but I like it. It is nice to get new tools to use.
Here is all my Light painting/steel wool work if you want to see more.
